Sabbath

Robert Thomas Quiring I am surrounded by my Christian faith everyday because I am a youth director and seminary student. Therefore, I am either at church or reading about theology, church history, or some other Christian related activity. These practices lead me to continually be growing in my faith, but recently I have been challenged and grown the most during the illness and death of my grandmother last semester. Without going into a detailed story, my grandmother became sick and passed away within the time period of one month last fall. I made an emergency trip to Kansas when things looked bleak and she got better. Then I made another emergency trip to be with her when she died. The emergency trips put a large strain on me because I ended up missing two weeks of classes physically and even more mentally. I take my seminary education and youth director job very seriously and so it was difficult for me when I fell far behind on assignments, tests, and everyday things that needed to be done. I became very close to the breaking point of needing to take some time off. I was not losing my faith, but was overwhelmed by the amount of things I needed to do while trying to deal with the death of my grandmother. During one of my breaking points, I decided to take the rest of the day off which is when I realized that I needed to take a step back to put everything into perspective. I had been running at such a fast speed in all facets of my life that I had forgotten that God calls us to rest. God tells us that it is important for a Sabbath time each week. Therefore, I started to begin each day with some time where I took a step back and attempted to put my life into perspective. This time has helped me to begin dealing with my grandmother's death, seminary work, and all of the other parts of life. Furthermore, it has given me time each day to acknowledge and explore my Christian faith. How am I living out my faith today? My daily Sabbath time has strengthened my faith and helped me to look at my everyday task through the lens of Christian faith.
