WSCF has chosen themes for the years 2005-2008 for consideration within the Federation. The themes are 2005 Women, 2006 Empire, 2007 Migration and 2008 Students. Each year the Federation brings together students from around the globe in a programme to work on the theme. Resources are prepared from each programme in order that all member movements benefit from the work of each programme. For information on previous global programmes please see Federation News November '05 and October '06 on www.wscfglobal.org
WSCF's theme for 2007 is Migration. Migration is a phenomenon affecting our societies and our lives deeply. It is not a recent phenomenon; all throughout history people have migrated for economic and political reasons. However migration is one of the major global issues of the early twenty-first century.
Participants in this programme will undertake research about migration and responses to migration in their context and then share this with the other participants. The programme includes exposure visits to migrants and NGOs working in Latin America on migration, Biblical and theological reflection on migration. Participants will be asked to consider what are the alternatives to the current approaches to migration and how can we work for just migration instead of migration of exploitation and domination? The conference will draw up an international solidarity action plan on migration for students around the world. For more details on the programme please see the concept paper.
The programme is being hosted by WSCF's Latin America and Caribbean region and will take place in Mexico City, Mexico.
There are two places reserved for participants from each region of WSCF for this event (three places reserved for the Latin America and Caribbean region). The selected participants are asked to pay the participation fee of the programme US$50). Airfares to Mexico are high, therefore participants are asked to contribute 5-30% of the price depending on their country of origin. Please note this is a guideline and higher percentage reimbursements are negotiable.
The application process is open to all students keen to participate in this WSCF programme. Preference will be given to students who are a) active in their National Movement b) who have some knowledge and understanding of the issues surrounding migration and c) have taken part in activities organised by her/ his country's social movement on migration.
